MARATHON DETAILS + COURSE

Course Details: Once again, we will start next to the building across the street from Founders Park and enjoy a 5K street loop to give everyone enough time to spread out before getting on the trail. At the 3.3 mile mark, the 10K, half marathon, and marathon will get on the sidewalk trail to briefly head west and then go east on the Indian Creek Trail for an out & back section. The 10K will retrace its steps on the sidewalk trail in Corporate Woods before finishing back on the street while the half marathon and marathon finish with an out & back section heading west on the Indian Creek Trail.

The half marathon will turn around east of Quivira on the trail, while the marathon will first traverse an out & back section up to 133rd & Greenwood and then make its way to Mid America Nazarene before turning around to head straight back to Corporate Woods. Both the half marathon and marathon will finish back on the street for the final part of their courses.

All races will enjoy lots of nice fall foliage!

Trail Guidelines – Please stay on the right side of the trail once you see your fellow race participants heading back.  Also, be sure to carefully navigate the white spray chalked cracks in the trail.

The marathon has a 6 hour time limit. If you are unable to finish on time or have sustained an injury, please find a first responder on the course, stop at the nearest aid station, and/or find a Garmin SmartPacer, and we will arrange transportation back to the finish.

This year,  2025, we’re requiring an early start at 7:00 AM for marathoners who expect to finish in 5 hours or longer.  Don’t worry—if you’re a bit faster and end up starting early, it won’t affect your chip time, so we’re not going to strictly enforce the start time. The main point is to let runners planning to take 5 hours or more know that they should aim to start at 7 AM. Many runners prefer this early start so they can finish sooner and enjoy the post-race festivities!

What’s the plan for the early start?

  • A 5:00 hour pacer will lead the early group, along with pacers for 5:15, 5:30, 5:45, and 6:00.
  • A lead bike will guide the early starters from the start line straight to the trail, just 1/10th mile in.
  • Early starters will take a separate out-and-back trail route before joining the main course at the official 3.4-mile mark.
  • After that, the remaining 22.8 miles will follow the regular course that everyone else runs.

So, essentially, the early starters will swap a road section for a scenic trail section.

All courses offer stunning scenic views and maintain the spirit of Gobbler Grind’s 32nd edition! Be prepared to enjoy a delightful street course and explore Johnson County’s most iconic paved creek trail.
